GROUP SESSION VIDEO

GROUP SESSION CONVERSATION GUIDE

1 CORINTHIANS 12:1 Now concerning SPIRITUAL GIFTS, brethren, I do not want you to be IGNORANT

  • 5 MINISTRY – OFFICES (FUNCTIONAL)
  • 9 MOTIVATIONAL – GRACE TALENTS (FUNCTIONAL)
  • 9 OPERATIONAL (CHARISMA – GRACE GIFTS)

TOTAL = 23 SPIRITUAL GIFTS

FUNCTIONAL GIFTS [Ministry Gifts (5) and Motivational (9)]

God designed you to fulfill a specific “function” in the church and gifted you accordingly. The MOTIVATIONAL and MINISTRY GIFTS you POSSESS, these gifts are YOURS; They ARE PART OF WHO YOU ARE. You operate in them all the time, intentionally or unintentionally.

MINISTRY GIFTS (OFFICES) - FUNCTIONAL

  • EPHESIANS 4:11-13 NKJV

OFFICES – an official position of duty, trust, or authority; especially in the government, a corporation, a society or the like.

  1. APOSTLE — the office AND exceptional ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to start and oversee the development of new churches with extraordinary spiritual authority, often with signs and wonders, and unusual transference of insight and enlightenment.
  2. EVANGELIST — the office AND exceptional ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to effectively communicate the gospel to unbelievers, often utilizing “gifts of healings” or other sign gifts, so people are inspired to respond in faith accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.
  3. PASTOR/SHEPHERD — the office AND exceptional ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to assume long-term spiritual authority and responsibility to spiritually feed, nurture, protect, care for, guide and correct people for on-going spiritual maturity so they can be fully devoted followers of Jesus.
  4. PROPHET — the office AND exceptional ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to confront and supernaturally communicate using the operational gifts of the Discerning of Spirits, Word of Knowledge and Word of Wisdom to reveal the mind of God and without any natural means of knowing the information.
  5. TEACHER — the office AND exceptional ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to communicate biblical information in a systematic and relevant way so that others will learn and become fully devoted followers of Jesus.

MOTIVATIONAL GIFTS - FUNCTIONAL

  • 1 CORINTHIANS 12:27-31 NKJV
  • ROMANS 12:3-8 NKJV
  • 1 PETER 4:9-10 NKJV
  • ROMANS 8:26-28 NKJV

MOTIVATIONAL GIFTS ARE THE ABILITIES WITHOUT THE OFFICES

  1. ADMINISTRATION (1 Cor 12:28)— the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to understand the goals of a ministry in the church and to organize and implement steps to systematically accomplish those goals
  2. ENCOURAGEMENT/EXHORTATION (Rom 12:8) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to strengthen, comfort, console, encourage and/or counsel others who are discouraged or wavering in their faith
  3. GIVING (Rom 12:8) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to be directed by God to contribute money and resources to the church or ministries with extreme liberality and cheerfulness
  4. HELPS (1 Cor 12:28) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to lighten the load and provide relief to those who minister within the church by doing practical tasks for them
  5. HOSPITALITY (1 Pet 4:9-10) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to create positive relational emotions of acceptance, connectivity and friendship in others by providing a warm welcome, unusual service and resourcefulness in communicating value to people
  6. INTERCESSION (Rom 8:26) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to pray for specific needs of others with great fervency, frequency and for extended periods of time
  7. LEADERSHIP (Rom 12:8) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to give vision, motivation and direction to the church or one of its ministries so that others will work together harmoniously
  8. MERCY (Rom 12:8) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to genuinely feel empathy for people who suffer from distressing physical, mental or emotional problems and to translate that compassion into practical help aimed at alleviating their suffering
  9. SERVICE (Rom 12:9) — the ability (possessing unsolicited vision and energy) to see what needs to be done in a practical sense within the church and then to meet those needs through serving

OPERATIONAL GIFTS – GRACE GIFTS

  • 1 CORINTHIANS 12:1-11 NKJV

THE OPERATIONAL GIFTS ARE GRACE ENDOWMENTS (CHARISMA)

The operational gifts are available to all believers as opportunities arise. If God determines there is a need and you are available, then God will use you in one of these gifts. YOU DO NOT “OWN” OPERATIONAL GIFTS. THEY ARE NOT PART OF YOUR MAKE-UP. THEY ONLY HAPPEN AS GOD SOVERIEGNLY WILLS (positive sovereignty).

DEFINITION: Gifts of the Spirit - are divine communications and endowments transmitted from God through the Holy Spirit into the Body of Christ, the Church.

3 REVELATION GIFTS

  • THE GIFT OF THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE
  • THE GIFT OF THE WORD OF WISDOM
  • THE GIFT OF DISCERNING OF SPIRITS

Everything within the realm of knowledge is covered in at least one of these gifts. Whether facts, events, purposes, motives, origins, or destinies — human, divine, or satanic; natural or supernatural; or past, present, or future — there is at least one gift that covers it. All this knowledge comes within the focal range of one or the other of these three revelation gifts.

3 POWER GIFTS

  • THE GIFT OF SPECIAL FAITH
  • THE GIFT(S) OF HEALING
  • THE GIFT OF WORKING OF MIRACLES

Through these gifts God imparts His own divine powers and abilities to man. They involve a supernatural ability and energy which man does not naturally possess

3 COMMUNICATION GIFTS

  • THE GIFT OF PROPHECY
  • THE GIFT(S) OF TONGUES
  • THE GIFT OF INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES

Through these gifts God brings His anointing and blessing to the Church. These gifts have to do with corporate worship, not personal worship.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:3 NKJV But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort TO MEN.

THE POWER OF FAITH AND GIFTS

ROMANS 12:6 NKJVHaving then GIFTS DIFFERING ACCORDING TO THE GRACE that is given to us, let us use them: if PROPHECY, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;

  • 5 MINISTRY – OFFICES (FUNCTIONAL)
  • 9 MOTIVATIONAL – GRACE TALENTS (FUNCTIONAL)
  • 9 OPERATIONAL (CHARISMA – GRACE GIFTS)

TOTAL = 23 SPIRITUAL GIFTS

HUNGER FOR HIM

1 THESSALONIANS 5:19-21 KJV QUENCH (extinguish) NOT the SPIRIT. 20 DESPISE (displace or set aside, regard lightly, or not esteem) NOT prophesyings. 21 PROVE ALL THINGS; hold fast that which is good.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:31 NKJV But EARNESTLY DESIRE the BEST GIFTS. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:39-40 NKJV Therefore, brethren, DESIRE EARNESTLY to prophesy, and DO NOT FORBID to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

EARNESTLY DESIRE (covet) comes from the Greek word root ZELOS which means to be ZEALOUS or have warmth of feeling towards.  It is an intense desire! Here it refers to a positive energy pocket.

  1. After watching this session’s video, what is your biggest takeaway, “ah ha” moment, or challenging thought? Why?
  2. When you hear about the Holy Spirit and His gifts, what does it make you feel, and why.
  3. Have you ever assessed and identified your motivational gifts? What were they?
  4. Have you ever been privileged to work with God in operational gifts? What was that experience like?
  5. Do you feel like you demonstrate a heart-hunger for all things related to the Holy Spirit? Why or why not?

PRAYER

Prayer time with the Group.

ENCOURAGEMENT CONNECTION THIS WEEK

PRAY FOR GROUP MEMBER - Pray for at least one person in the Group. Try to identify someone who hasn't been prayed for, or given an encouraging Scripture. Don't worry about feeling inadequate as a prayer. No one feels like they are professional prayers, at least not when they look into eyes of the Almighty God. Praying the Scriptures over people is the best way to learn how to pray effectively. Simply find a Scripture, put the person's name in the text, and pray those words out loud. Then ask the Lord to help you think of things to say to Him about them that would help their lives.

ASK FOR A SCRIPTURE WORD - Ask God to give you a Scripture to give them to encourage, comfort and edify them. You can Google search "God's Promises" and find a plethora of appropriate texts. Look for one that seems to give you a spark of energy as you think about the person you have been praying for.

DELIVER THE WORD TO THEM - Then send them an email, text or phone call to encourage them. This is how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. As you practice these movements you will expand your own capacity with God, all while giving people much needed hope and strength.

Do you think you’ve changed in the last year? How so?

GROUP SESSION VIDEO

GROUP SESSION CONVERSATION GUIDE

I want to acknowledge that this one work of the Holy Spirit can conjure up a plethora of images for people:

  • For some those images are intensely positive, and grace-filled
  • While for others the images are polar opposites, images of excess, mindlessness and uncontrolled ecstatic speech.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SPEAKING IN TONGUES

In the correlated workshop session we will answer the following questions:

  1. What is the Biblical, doctrinal foundation for “speaking in tongues?” Is there more in the Bible about “speaking in tongues” than just Acts chapter 2’s Day of Pentecost experience?
  2. Is it God’s desire that EVERY Christian to have this blessing, or is it reserved for a SELECT percentage of Christians?
  3. Does a person have to “speak in tongues” to experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Can a person be “filled” with the Spirit and NOT speak in tongues?
  4. Is speaking in tongues the “initial evidence” of the baptism in the Holy Spirit? Are there other evidences?
  5. Is there a difference between a devotional prayer language of unknown tongues, and an operational spiritual gift “the gift of tongues” that should be interpreted?
  6. In the requirement of an interpreter being present, is that the same as the gift of “interpretation of tongues?”
  7. Is it permissible, or is it forbidden, for a person to speak in tongues when other people are around? Should this unique gift be banished to a private, closet experience, or should it also be enjoyed in corporate settings?
  8. What are the benefits of “speaking in tongues?” Was it originally just for preaching to other cultures and language-groups?
  9. In 1 CORINTHIANS 13, the Apostle Paul says, “tongues would pass away…”. After all the original apostles died, and or when the written Bible was given to us, did the purpose of tongues pass away?
  10. Are non-tongue-talkers less spiritual Christians than tongue-talking Christians?
  11. I have asked for God to make me speak in tongues, and have had the many ministers and seasoned Christians pray for me, but He hasn’t given me that ability yet. What does the Bible say about that?
  12. Can a person who struggles with sinful patterns be a candidate for speaking in tongues, or is a certain level of spiritual purity required first?
  13. Should a person who asks God for the Holy Spirit’s infilling be concerned with getting a devil, or becoming demonized?
  14. What if a person speaks in tongues, but then feels like they are just making it up?
  15. Why do Pentecostals/Charismatics give “excessive, inordinate” emphasis to the gift of tongues compared with the other "Spiritual Gifts?"

THE DAY OF PENTECOST

ACTS 2:1-12 NKJV When the DAY OF PENTECOST had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them DIVIDED TONGUES, as of fire, and [one] SAT UPON EACH OF THEM. 4 And they were ALL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT and began to SPEAK WITH OTHER TONGUES, as the SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because EVERYONE HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 "And how [is it that] WE HEAR, EACH IN OUR OWN LANGUAGE in which we were born? 9 "Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 "Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 "Cretans and Arabs--we hear them SPEAKING IN OUR OWN TONGUES THE WONDERFUL WORKS OF GOD." 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?"

This was the INITIAL baptism of the Holy Spirit upon believers. In this paramount occasion we see the exuberant worship of God through “other tongues,” or tongues “other” than the speaker’s known language.

Understand that speaking in “tongues” or “spiritual languages” was PROPHESIED HUNDREDS OF YEARS BEFORE CHRIST appeared.

MORE THOUGHTS ON SPEAKING IN TONGUES…

  • 120 spoke on the Day of Pentecost
  • The original 11 apostles (minus Judas, who betrayed Jesus and hanged himself) spoke in spiritual languages in Acts 2
  • The Apostle Paul spoke in tongues
  • An undesignated number termed “a large” group, Gentiles, spoke in tongues in Acts 10
  • At the city of Ephesus, the founding church fathers spoke in tongues in Acts 19

We have historical references in the writings of many early church fathers from the first century till now:

  • Iraneaus  (Disciple of Polycarp – 115-202 AD) – Said speaking in tongues was common in his day
  • Tertullian (Father of Latin Theology – 150-240 AD) – Affirmed their existence in his day
  • Celsus (Unbelieving Philosopher – 177 AD) – Scornfully describes the procedures at Christina meetings where tongues are spoken
  • Ambrose (One of the Great Bishops of Christendom – 340-397 AD) – Plainly states that tongues speaking was a continuing phenomenon
  • Martin Luther (Father of the Reformation – 1483-1546 AD) – There is evidence that he was a tongue talker that helped his compelling faith and heroic courage
  • John Calvin (1509-1564 AD) – Writes about the many tongue speakers of his day and notes that many great theologians disclaim against them, as he himself defends their right to worship with tongues.
  • John Wesley (Founder of the Methodist Church - 1703-1791 AD) – Spoke of tongues being utilized by people of his day
  • And many others

LET ME AFFIRM THE PURSUIT FOR SPIRITUAL LANGUAGES

Let me affirm that your interest in spiritual language isn’t prompted by a shallow search for novelty. Clearly it is rooted in a genuine desire for all of God to be revealed to us in His fullness; a passion to know Him, His Word and any resource that will draw me nearer to His heart in prayer and will exalt Him more grandly in my private worship.

It is also my desire that for a person of genuine skepticism to the whole topic would give themselves to intently listen, and invest themselves in over these workshop sessions and bonus teachings.  There is not much more that saddens my heart than to hear people making bold declarations of opposition to something they have never really investigated.

WHAT WE COVER IN THE CORRELATED WORKSHOP SESSION

Speaking in tongues...

  • Is neither unbiblical, nor outdated
  • Is NOT a transcendental experience
  • Is NOT a status symbol
  • Is NOT proposed as a substitute for spiritual growth
  • Is NOT divisive…people are!
  • IS without doubt “mystical,” but doesn’t have to project “madness”

HUNGER FOR HIM

  2. What is your first experience with someone speaking in tongues? Was it a positive or negative experience?
  3. Should a person avoid speaking in tongues because other people have misused the blessing, projecting some level of madness?
  4. What are your thoughts when you hear of some of the great church fathers (Iraneaus, Tertullian, etc) who spoke in tongues, defended it and/or promoted it?
  5. What do you think holds people back, causes people to pause or shut down, from this experiential blessing of speaking in tongues?

What would you consider your dream job?

GROUP SESSION VIDEO

GROUP SESSION CONVERSATION GUIDE

MATTHEW 3:11-12 NIV (John the Baptist said) I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will BAPTIZE you with the HOLY SPIRIT and with FIRE.

Jesus later uses the same expression:

ACTS 1:4-5 NKJV And being assembled together with them, (Jesus) He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the PROMISE of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;  5 for John truly BAPTIZED with water, but you shall be BAPTIZED with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

This prophetic experience unfolded to them on the day of Pentecost:

ACTS 2:1-4 NIV When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were FILLED with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Here we have another expression, “FILLED with the Holy Spirit,” used synonymously with “BAPTIZED with the Holy Spirit.”  We read in…

ACTS 10:44-46 NKJV While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit FELL upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the GIFT of the HOLY SPIRIT had been POURED OUT on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Peter himself describing this experience in Jerusalem, told the story in this way…

ACTS 11:15-17 NKJV And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit FELL UPON them, AS UPON US at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, 'John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be BAPTIZED with the Holy Spirit.'  17 If therefore God gave them the SAME GIFT as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?"

Here Peter distinctly called the experience which came to Cornelius and his household, being “BAPTIZED with the Holy Spirit.”  Thus we see that the expressions…

  •  “…FILLED with the Holy Spirit…” (ACTS 2:4)
  • “…the Holy Spirit FELL…” (ACTS 10:44)
  •  “…BAPTISM with the Holy Spirit…” (ACTS 11:16)
  • “ …God gave them the SAME GIFT…” (ACTS 11:17)
  • “I send THE PROMISE of my Father upon you…” (LUKE 24:49; ACTS 1:4)
  • And “CLOTHED WITH POWER from on high…” (LUKE 24:49)

…are all practically synonymous.

THE FILLING ISN’T TO BE A ONE-TIME EXPERIENCE

ACTS 2:4 to ACTS 4:30 (TWICE FILLED)

ACTS 2:1-4 NIV When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were FILLED with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

ACTS 4:31 NKJV And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all FILLED with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

EPHESIANS 5:18 NKJV “…but be (BEING) FILLED with the Spirit…”

So What Is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit? In our first answer let’s consider the general idea of being “BAPTIZED” with “THE HOLY SPIRIT.”

  • “Baptized” (Immersed)
  • “Immersed”
  • “Saturated”
  • “To be fully pervaded”
  • “Thoroughly permeated with”

IMMERSED IN “WHOM”? WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

  • He is the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding
  • He is the Spirit of Might
  • He is our Comforter, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby, Advocate, Helper, and Intercessor
  • He is “PEACE that passes all understanding”
  • He is our spiritual rest
  • He is the anointing behind miracles
  • He is hope and vision
  • He is faith and conviction
  • He is passion and purpose
  • He is omnipotent – there is nothing He can’t do
  • He is omniscient – there is nothing He doesn’t know
  • He is omnipresent – there is nowhere He hasn’t been
  • He is grace and unqualified acceptance
  • He is forgiveness and unending mercy
  • He is “love” personified
  • He is the PROMISE of the Father
  • HE, THE HOLY SPIRIT, IS THE ONE SENT TO IMMERSE OUR LIVES, INSIDE AND OUT!

MODERN DAY EXPERIENCES

Charles Finney (1792-1875)

Charles Finney, an evangelist and later founder of Oberlin College, had used the expression “baptism of the Holy Ghost” to describe an early experience with God in his life.  A few hours after what Finney described as a face-to-face encounter with Christ, the following occurred:

“I received a mighty baptism of the Holy Ghost…without any recollection that I had ever heard the thing mentioned by any person in the world, the Holy Spirit descended upon me in a manner that seemed to go through me, body and soul….  Indeed it seemed to come in waves and waves of liquid love….  I wept aloud with joy and love; and I do not know but I should say I literally bellowed out the unutterable gushings of my heart. These waves came over me and over me, one after the other, until I recollect I cried out, ‘I shall die if these waves continue to pass over me’… yet I had no fear of death” (Charles G. Finney: An Autobiography, 20-21)

Dwight L. Moody

Dwight L. Moody, a nineteenth-century evangelist, pastor, and founder of Moody Bible Institute, after many years of preaching, related how two women would say to him regularly, “You need the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Moody reflected thereafter,

“I need the power?  Why, I thought I had power [because] I had the largest congregation in Chicago and there were many conversions. I was in a sense satisfied.”

Soon though, the two godly women were praying with Moody, and…

“they poured out their hearts in prayer that I might receive the filling of the Holy Spirit. There came a great hunger into my soul….  I began to cry out as I never did before. I really felt that I did not want to live if I could not have this power for service.”

Sometime later Moody related this:

“One day, in the city of New York – oh, what a day! – I cannot describe it, I seldom refer to it; it is almost too sacred an experience to name. Paul had an experience of which he never spoke for fourteen years. I can only say that God revealed Himself to me, and I had such an experience of His love that I had to ask Him so stay His hand. I went preaching again.  The sermons were not different; I did not present any new truths, and yet hundreds were converted. I would not now be placed back before that blessed experience if you should give me all the world.”

(W.R. Moody, The Life of DL Moody, 146-147,149).

30 MARKED BENEFITS AND EVIDENCES

QUESTIONS

  1. After watching this session’s video, what is your biggest takeaway, “ah ha” moment, or challenging thought? Why?
  2. When you hear, “God needs you to be led by Him more than you could possibly ‘want to!”, how does that make you feel?
  3. Prior to this Group semester, how did you assume God generally communicated with people? Did you think it was more spectacular guidance (angels, dreams, etc.)? Or did you think the leadings were limited to an unconscious influence on our thinking and reasoning? Share how you understood it would happen.
  4. Have you ever been led by the Holy Spirit by one or more of the “screening gauges”: Knowings, witnesses, compellings, peace, perceptions, or seems good? Share examples.

ENCOURAGEMENT CONNECTION THIS WEEK

  • PRAY FOR GROUP MEMBER - Pray for at least one person in the Group.
  • ASK FOR A SCRIPTURE WORD - Ask God to give you a Scripture to give them to encourage, comfort and edify them. You can Google search "God's Promises" and find a plethora of appropriate texts. Look for one that seems to give you a spark of energy as you think about the person you have been praying for.
  • DELIVER THE WORD TO THEM - Then send them an email, text or phone call to encourage them. This is how the Holy Spirit works in our lives. As you practice these movements you will expand your own capacity with God, all while giving people much needed hope and strength.

GROUP SESSION CONVERSATION GUIDE

1 THESSALONIANS 5:23 NKJV Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you COMPLETELY; and may your whole SPIRIT, SOUL, and BODY be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Man is a three-part being! He is a spirit, has a soul and lives inside a physical body.

  • God made man in His likeness and image (Gen 1:26-27).
  • God is a spirit (John 4:24).
  • Man must be a spirit-being.

SPIRIT

JOHN 4:23-24 NKJV [Jesus said] But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in SPIRIT and TRUTH; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 GOD [IS] SPIRIT, and those who worship Him MUST WORSHIP in SPIRIT and TRUTH.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:14 AMP For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, MY SPIRIT [by the Holy Spirit within me] prays, but MY MIND is unproductive [it bears no fruit and helps nobody] (KJV – my UNDERSTANDING is unfruitful).

SOUL (MIND, WILL AND EMOTIONS)

HEBREWS 4:12 KJV For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the DIVIDING ASUNDER of SOUL and SPIRIT, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the HEART.

JAMES 1:19, 21 NKJV Wherefore, my BELOVED BRETHREN… 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to SAVE your SOULS.

BODY

2 CORINTHIANS 5:6 KJV Therefore [we are] always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at HOME IN THE BODY, we are absent from the Lord:

1 CORINTHIANS 9:27 NKJV But I discipline MY BODY and bring [IT] INTO SUBJECTION, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

ROMANS 8:14, 16 KJV For as many as are LED by the SPIRIT OF GOD, they are the sons of God. ... 16 The SPIRIT itself BEARETH WITNESS with OUR SPIRIT, that we are the children of God:

God needs you to be led by Him

more than you could possibly “want to be!”

If God DOESN’T lead us

through our BODY (senses)

or SOUL (reasonings based on the senses),

HOW does He lead us?

THROUGH OUR SPIRITS!

QUESTIONS

1.    After watching this session’s video, what is your biggest takeaway, “ah ha” moment, or challenging thought? Why?

2.    When was the first time you understood that humans are three-part beings; spirit, soul and body? How does this affect your relationship with God?

3.    What does it mean to you to have the Holy Spirit “bear witness” with your spirit (Romans 8:14, 16)?

4.    Give some examples of how dependence on the 5 physical senses (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling) can skew people’s perception of God.

5.    Have you ever been led by God’s revelation to your spirit, guiding and/or protecting you? Share a small portion of your story.

GROUP SESSION VIDEO

GROUP SESSION CONVERSATION GUIDE

Today, let’s imagine again. Imagine having access to present day and historical figures (excluding Jesus) who are deeply desirous to give their expertise to us, as they fill kind of board-of-advisors seats in our lives. Imagine having a personal mentoring/accountability COMMITTEE of complete experts for every category of our lives. For instance…

BUSINESS/FINANCIAL (Maybe it would be…)

  • John D Rockefeller
  • Andrew Carnegie
  • Cornelius Vanderbilt
  • Bill Gates
  • Warren Buffett
  • Alan Greenspan
  • Jack Welch
  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Stephen Covey
  • King David

RELATIONSHIPS /MARRIAGE/PARENTING

  • Apostle Paul
  • Dr. Phil
  • Dr. John Gottman (Gottman Institute)
  • James Dobson
  • Susanna Wesley (John-Charles)
  • Emily Post

 SPIRITUAL LIFE

  • The Apostle Paul
  • 11 Apostles
  • Dr. Billy Graham
  • Brother Lawrence
  • Dallas Willard
  • Mother Teresa
  • Favorite minister over past 200 years

INTELLECTUAL/PHILOSOPHICAL LIFE

  • Solomon
  • Plato
  • Aristotle
  • Thomas Aquainas
  • Blaise Pascal
  • C.S. Lewis
  • Ravi Zacharias
  • Soren Kierkegaard

WHAT WOULD YOUR BOARD LOOK LIKE?

Now imagine that we have an HUMAN INTEGRATION MACHINE that morphs all of these people in a given category together, taking all their gifts, knowledge, perceptions, skills, character virtues, willpower, morals, discipline, etc., and making them ONE SUPERHUMAN

  • What would that be like to have this expert board-of-directors available for your personal development?
  • Can you fathom the genius of that one “morphed human being”?

Now imagine that another setting on this HUMAN INTEGRATION MACHINE is able to take this new morphed BOD man you just made to advise you; that has all the attributes of each individual (their gifts, knowledge, perceptions, skills, character virtues, willpower, morals, discipline, etc.); and fuse this superhuman into inseparable oneness with you.

So now a person like you, or me, is no longer sitting in elated admiration of each one of our board-of-directors, but now their abilities, talents and gifts have been infused into each of us.

This superhuman is now an intrinsic part of our very nature.

  • It’s character is now our character.
  • It’s willpower is now our willpower.
  • It’s morals are so powerful it overwhelms our own feeble morals.

Now everything about them is entirely morphed into us. YET our own personality, what makes us uniquely us, is still fully intact.

WE HAVE SOMETHING BETTER IN THE HOLY SPIRIT

That is exactly what happened in the NEW BIRTH, the experience called “salvation.” The HOLY SPIRIT, greater than any board-of-advisors, has become one with the believer transposing His entire person in, on and through our lives.

JOHN 14:16-20 NKJV [Jesus said] And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another HELPER (Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, and Standby) , that He may ABIDE WITH YOU FOREVER-- 17 the SPIRIT OF TRUTH, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees HIM nor knows HIM; but you know HIM, for HE dwells WITH YOU and will be IN YOU.

1 CORINTHIANS 6:19 NKJV [Paul said] Or do you not know that YOUR BODY is the TEMPLE of the HOLY SPIRIT [who is] IN YOU, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

2 CORINTHIANS 6:16 NKJV And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will DWELL IN them and WALK AMONG [them] (KJV “IN THEM”). I will be their God, And they shall be My people."

QUESTIONS

1.    After watching this session’s video, what is your biggest takeaway, “ah ha” moment, or challenging thought? Why?

2.    If you were to choose 3 people in history (other than Jesus) to sit on your board of directors, who would you choose, and why?

3.    Before this week’s video, what was your understanding of the Holy Spirit living inside you?

4.    How are you processing the idea that Christians shouldn’t pray for power, or for God to “be with us,” because of the reality of the Holy Spirit is living inside us?

5.    When the Scripture (2 Corinthians 6:16, see Group Conversation Guide) says God will “dwell in” and “walk in” the believer, should we take that literally? How would this be different than the Old Testament believer who had God in their memories, but not literally “in them?”

GROUP SESSION VIDEO

GROUP SESSION CONVERSATION GUIDE

From the book of Genesis through the book of Revelation the Holy Spirit has had a constant impact and definite role in God’s plan for man.

From Genesis when “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Gen 1:2 KJV)” to Revelation when the Holy Spirit and the bride say “come.”  Throughout the generations from …

  • Giving Joseph the ability to interpret dreams (Gen 41:14-44)
  • Filling the builders of God’s temple with wisdom and creativity for extraordinary workmanship (Ex 28:3)
  • Giving Samson supernatural strength to single-handedly fight over 1000 soldiers and win (Judges 13:25)
  • Empowering Elijah to outrun a horse and chariot (1Kings 17-19)
  • Inspiring men to write songs (2 Sam 16:2)
  • Speaking through prophets like Ezekiel and Jeremiah
  • Giving direction and strategies to kings like King Jehosophat (1Chron 20)
  • Impregnating Mary
  • Empowering Jesus for his miraculous ministry
  • Speaking through the Apostle Paul and other writers of inspired documents
  • Regenerating the spirit within people
  • Pouring Himself out on the Church
  • Helping people in prayer

…the Holy Spirit has been active in redeeming mankind.

Before we really get caught up in the activity and awesome experiences of the Holy Spirit we need to better contextualize this whole topic by being introduced to who the Holy Spirit actually is.

If we think of the Holy Spirit, as many do, as merely a divine power or influence, that we are to somehow get a hold of and use, it will lead us to focus on self-exalting and ultimately empty life tasks or functions.  But if we think of the Holy Spirit as a person we enter the awesome and growing thrill of an interpersonal, intimate, glorious, all-encompassing relationship with Him.  If we just once grasp the thought of the Holy Spirit as a divine person of infinite majesty, glory, holiness, and power, with God’s plan and your interests at heart, we will be forever humbled, yielded to His service and moved by this transcendent oneness in relationship with Him.

While it is easy for many to imagine being in a relationship with God the Father, or God the Son (Jesus), I want to begin provoking new thoughts of having a real relationship with the Holy Spirit.

18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. 19 A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that I [am] in My Father, and YOU IN ME, and I IN YOU.

2 CORINTHIANS 13:14 NKJV The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the COMMUNION of the HOLY SPIRIT [be] with you all. Amen.
